Hadith of Hazzal (RA)

Hadith 946:3

'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Yazid ibn Nu'aym, from his father: That Ma'iz ibn Malik came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "Apply the Book of Allah upon me." He turned away from him four times, then he ordered him to be stoned. When the stones touched him—'Abd al-Rahman said: And he said once: When they bit him—he panicked and ran out quickly. 'Abd Allah ibn Unays (or Anas) went out from his gathering and struck him with the shank of a donkey, which brought him down. He then came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and told him of his affair. He said: "Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented, and Allah would have accepted his repentance." Then he said: "O Hazzal, if you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you."
