Musnad Ahmad 36:4

Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, Safwan narrated to us, Shurayh ibn Ubayd al-Hadrami and others narrated to me, he said: Iyad ibn Ghanam, the governor of Dara, flogged [someone] when it was conquered, so Hisham ibn Hakim spoke harshly to him until Iyad became angry. Then he remained for some nights. Then Hisham ibn Hakim came to him and apologized to him. Then Hisham said to Iyad: "Did you not hear the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Indeed, among the people who will receive the severest punishment are those who were the severest in punishing people in this world'?" Iyad ibn Ghanam said: "O Hisham ibn Hakim, we have heard what you heard, and we have seen what you saw. Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Whoever wishes to advise a ruler about a matter, let him not do so openly, but let him take him by the hand and be alone with him. If he accepts it from him, then that is [the goal], and if not, he has fulfilled what was upon him [to do]'? And you, O Hisham, are indeed the bold one, for you dare to confront the ruler of Allah. Did you not fear that the ruler would kill you, and you would be the one killed by the ruler of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He?"
