Musnad Ahmad 1034:43

Bahz and Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, they said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, Humayd—meaning Ibn Hilal—narrated to us. Abu al-Nadr said in his narration: Humayd—meaning Ibn Hilal—narrated to me, Nasr ibn Asim al-Laythi narrated to us, he said: I came to al-Yashkuri with a group from Banu Layth. He said: He asked, "Who are the people?" We said: "Banu Layth." He said: So we asked him and he asked us, then we said: "We came to you to ask you about the hadith of Hudhayfah." He said: We were returning with Abu Musa, and the beasts of burden were exhausted in Kufa. My companion and I asked Abu Musa for permission, and he granted it to us. We arrived in Kufa early in the day. I said to my companion: "I am entering the mosque, and when the market starts, I will come out to you." He said: So I entered the mosque, and there was a circle in it, as if their heads had been severed, listening to the speech of a man. He said: So I stood over them. He said: A man came and stood by my side. He said: I said, "Who is this?" He said: "Are you a Basran?" I said: "Yes." He said: "You would have known if you were a Kufan; you would not have asked about this. This is Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman." He said: So I drew near to him and heard him saying: "People used to ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about the good, and I used to ask him about the evil, knowing that the good would not escape me. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, is there evil after this good?' He said: 'O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it,' three times." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there evil after this good?" He said: "A trial and evil." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there good after this evil?" He said: "O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it," three times. He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there good after this evil?" He said: "A truce upon smoke, and a community upon impurities." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, the truce upon smoke, what is it?" He said: "The hearts of a people will not return to what they were upon." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there evil after this good?" He said: "O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it," three times. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there evil after this good?" He said: "A blind, deaf trial, upon which are callers at the gates of Hell. And for you to die, O Hudhayfah, while you are biting onto a tree root, is better for you than to follow any one of them."
