Musnad Ahmad 1034:81

Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr and Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, they said: al-Walid—meaning ibn Jami'—narrated to us. Abu Nu'aym said: From Abu al-Tufayl. [And Muhammad ibn Abdullah said]: Abu al-Tufayl narrated to us, he said: There was between Hudhayfah and a man from the people of al-'Aqabah what usually happens between people. So he said: "I adjure you by Allah, how many were the companions of al-'Aqabah?" The people said to him: "Inform him since he asked you." He said: "We used to be told that they were fourteen." And Abu Nu'aym said: The man said: "We used to be told that they were fourteen." He said: "If you were among them"—and Abu Nu'aym said: "among them"—"then the people were fifteen. And I bear witness by Allah that twelve of them are at war with Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the day when the witnesses arise." Abu Ahmad said: "The witnesses." "And three were excused. They said: 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and we did not know what the people intended.'" Abu Ahmad said in his narration: He was at a rocky tract (harrah), so he walked and said to the people: "The water is scarce, so let no one reach it before me." He found people who had reached it before him, so he cursed them that day.
