Musnad Ahmad 790:122

Safwan ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, ‘Uzrah ibn Thabit informed us, from Yahya ibn ‘Aqil, from Ibn Ya‘mar, from Abu al-Aswad al-Du’ali, who said: I went early one day to ‘Imran ibn Husayn, and he said: “O Abu al-Aswad,” and he mentioned the hadith: That a man from Juhaynah or Muzaynah came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: “O Messenger of Allah, what do you see regarding what people do today and strive for? Is it something decreed for them and passed upon them in a destiny that has already preceded, or is it regarding what they face of what their Prophet brought to them, and the proof was established against them for it?” He said: “Rather, it is something decreed for them and passed upon them.” He said: “Then why do they work, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Whoever Allah created for one of the two stations, He facilitates him for its action. The confirmation of that is in the Book of Allah: ‘And a soul and He who proportioned it, and inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness’ [Ash-Shams: 8].”
