Hadith of Imran ibn Husain (RA)

Hadith 790:49

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu al-Muhallab, from 'Imran bin Husayn, who said: Al-'Adba' belonged to a man from Banu 'Uqayl, and it was among the foremost of the pilgrims' camels. The man was taken prisoner, and Al-'Adba' was taken with him. He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by him while he was in bonds, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was on a donkey with a velvet cloth on it. He said: "O Muhammad, you take me and you take the foremost of the pilgrims' camels?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "We take you for the crime of your allies, Thaqif." He said: Thaqif had taken two men from the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) prisoner. He said—among what he said—: "And I am a Muslim." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If you had said that while you were in control of your own affairs, you would have succeeded with all success." He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went on. He said: He said: "O Muhammad, I am hungry, so feed me, and I am thirsty, so give me to drink." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This is your need." Then he was ransomed for the two men, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) kept Al-'Adba' for his own riding. He said: Then the polytheists raided the grazing livestock of Medina and took them away, and Al-'Adba' was among them. He said: And they took a woman from the Muslims prisoner. He said: When they would stop, they would rest their camels in their courtyards. He said: The woman stood up one night after they had fallen asleep. Whenever she came to a camel, it would groan, until she came to Al-'Adba'. She came to a docile, trained she-camel, so she mounted it, then directed it toward Medina. He said: She vowed that if Allah saved her upon it, she would slaughter it. When she arrived in Medina, it was recognized as the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: The Prophet (ﷺ) was informed of her vow, or she came to him and informed him. He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "How evil is that with which you rewarded it," or "How evil is that with which you rewarded her. Allah saved her upon it, and you would slaughter it?" He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "There is no fulfillment of a vow in disobedience to Allah, nor in what the son of Adam does not possess." Wuhayb—meaning Ibn Khalid—said: Thaqif were allies to Banu 'Uqayl. Hammad bin Salamah added in it: And Al-'Adba' was tame; it was not prevented from a watering trough or vegetation. 'Affan said: *Mujarrasah* means trained/accustomed.
