Hadith 790:79
Isma'il narrated to us, Abu Harun al-Ghanawi narrated to us, from Mutarrif, who said: Imran ibn Husayn said to me: "O Mutarrif, by Allah, I used to think that if I wished, I could narrate from the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for two consecutive days without repeating a single hadith. Then, what made me slower and more averse to that was that men from the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), or from some of the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)—I witnessed what they witnessed and I heard what they heard—narrate hadiths that are not as they say. And I know that they do not fall short of [seeking] good, but I fear that it might be made to appear to me as it was made to appear to them." He would sometimes say: "If I were to tell you that I heard from the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) such and such, I would see that I have spoken the truth." And sometimes he would be resolute and say: "I heard the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) say such and such." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Nasr ibn Ali narrated to me, Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, from Abu Harun al-Ghanawi, who said: Hani' al-A'war narrated to me, from Mutarrif, from Imran—that is, Ibn Husayn—from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), the like of this hadith. I narrated it to my father, and he considered it good and said: "He added a man in it."
حدثنا إسماعيل، حدثنا أبو هارون الغنوي، عن مطرف قال: قال لي عمران بن حصين: أي مطرف، والله إن كنت لأرى أني لو شئت حدثت عن نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يومين متتابعين لا أعيد حديثا، ثم لقد زادني بطئا عن ذلك وكراهية له أن " رجالا من أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، أو من بعض أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، شهدت كما شهدوا، وسمعت كما سمعوا يحدثون أحاديث ما هي كما يقولون، ولقد علمت أنهم لا يألون عن الخير، فأخاف أن يشبه لي كما شبه لهم، فكان أحيانا يقول: لو حدثتكم أني سمعت من نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كذا وكذا رأيت أني قد صدقت، وأحيانا يعزم فيقول: سمعت نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول كذا وكذا " قال أبو عبد الرحمن: حدثني نصر بن علي، حدثنا بشر بن المفضل، عن أبي هارون الغنوي قال: حدثني هانئ الأعور، عن مطرف، عن عمران هو ابن حصين، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نحو هذا الحديث، فحدثت به أبي فاستحسنه وقال: زاد فيه رجلا
