Hadith of Imran ibn Husain (RA)

Hadith 790:84

Yahya narrated to us, from ‘Awf, Abu Raja’ narrated to us, ‘Imran ibn Husayn narrated to me, he said: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and we traveled through the night until, when we were in the last part of the night, we fell into that sleep, and there is no sleep sweeter to the traveler than it. He said: Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun. The first to wake up was so-and-so, then so-and-so—Abu Raja’ named them, but ‘Awf forgot them—then ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab was the fourth. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), when he slept, we would not wake him until he himself woke up, because we did not know what might happen to him in his sleep. When ‘Umar woke up and saw what had befallen the people—and he was a man who was loud-voiced and hardy—he said: So he said *Allahu Akbar* and raised his voice with the *Takbir*. He kept saying *Allahu Akbar* and raising his voice with the *Takbir* until the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) woke up due to his voice. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) woke up, they complained to him about what had befallen them. He said: "No harm," or "It does not harm. Depart." So he departed and traveled a short distance, then he stopped and called for water for ablution, and he performed ablution. The call to prayer was made, and he led the people in prayer. When he turned away from his prayer, he saw a man standing apart who had not prayed with the people. He said: "What prevented you, O so-and-so, from praying with the people?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, a state of ritual impurity (*janabah*) befell me, and there is no water. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "You must use the earth (*al-sa'id*), for it is sufficient for you." Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) traveled, and the people complained to him of thirst. He stopped and called for so-and-so—Abu Raja’ named him, but ‘Awf forgot him—and he called ‘Ali and said: "Go and seek water for us." He said: So they went off and met a woman between two water skins (*mazadatayn*) or two leather bags (*satih-tayn*) of water on her camel. They said to her: "Where is the water?" She said: My last time with water was yesterday at this hour, and our men are away. He said: They said to her: "Come along." She said: To where? They said: To the Messenger of Allah. She said: This one who is called the *Sabi’* (the apostate/the one who has changed his religion)? They said: He is the one you mean. So come along. They brought her to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and told him the story. They helped her down from her camel, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called for a vessel and poured into it from the mouths of the two water skins or the two leather bags. He tied their mouths, and it was announced to the people: "Give drink and draw water." So whoever wished to drink drank, and whoever wished to draw water drew water. The last of that was that he gave the one who was in a state of ritual impurity a vessel of water and said: "Go and pour it over yourself." He said: She was standing, watching what he was doing with her water. He said: By Allah, it had been taken from her, and it seemed to us that it was fuller than it was when he started with it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Gather for her." They gathered for her from among dates, flour, and *sawiq* (barley meal) until they had gathered much food for her. They put it in a garment and helped her onto her camel, and they placed the garment in front of her. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to her: "You know, by Allah, that we did not take anything from your water, but it is Allah who gave us to drink." He said: She came to her people, and she had been delayed from them. They said: What kept you, O so-and-so? She said: A wonder! Two men met me and took me to this one who is called the *Sabi’*, and he did with my water such and such—for what had happened. By Allah, he is either the greatest sorcerer between this and this—and she pointed with her middle finger and index finger, and she raised them to the sky, meaning the sky and the earth—or he is truly the Messenger of Allah. He said: The Muslims used to raid the polytheists around her after that, but they would not touch the tribe to which she belonged. So she said one day to her people: I do not think that these people are leaving you alone by accident. So would you like to enter Islam? They obeyed her, and they entered into Islam.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
