Hadith of Itban bin Malik (RA)

Hadith 331:4

'Abd al-A'la ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Mahmud ibn al-Rabi', from 'Itban ibn Malik, that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, the floods come between me and the mosque of my people, so I would like for you to come to me and pray in a place in my house that I may designate as a mosque." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "We shall do so." He said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached the morning, he went early to Abu Bakr and took him along. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered, he said: "Where do you want [me to pray]?" I pointed out to him a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up, and we formed rows behind him, and he prayed two rak'ahs with us. We detained him for *khazir* (a dish made of flour and meat) that we had prepared. The people of the house—meaning the people of the village—heard [of his presence], and they began to gather until the house was filled. A man from the people said: "Where is Malik ibn al-Dukhshum?" A man said: "That is one of the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not say that. Does he not say 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the Face of Allah?" He said: "As for us, we see his face and his speech [directed] toward the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not say that. He says: 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the Face of Allah." A man from the people said: "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If a servant meets [Allah] on the Day of Resurrection saying: 'There is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the Face of Allah, Allah will surely forbid the Fire to him." Mahmud said: I narrated this to a group of people among whom was Abu Ayyub. He said: "I do not think the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said this." He said: I said: "If I return and 'Itban is still alive, I will ask him." So I arrived [there], and he was blind and was the imam of his people. I asked him, and he narrated to me just as he had narrated to me the first time. And 'Itban was a veteran of Badr.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
