Hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah al-Suwa'i (RA)

Hadith 907:177

Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, who said: I heard Jabir ibn Samurah say: A short, disheveled man with muscular build, wearing a lower garment, was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he had committed adultery. He (the Prophet) turned him away twice. He said: Then he ordered him to be stoned. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whenever we set out as warriors in the way of Allah, one of them stays behind, bleating like a billy goat, offering one of them a drink of milk. Allah does not grant me power over any of them but that I make him an example," or "I make him a deterrent." He said: Then Sa'id ibn Jubayr narrated it to me, and he said: Indeed, he turned him away four times.
