Hadith of Jabir ibn Sulaym al-Hujaymi (RA)
حديث جابر بن سليم الهجيمي
Hadith 851:0
Narrated to us by Yahya ibn Sa'id, from 'Uthman ibn Ghiyath, who said: Narrated to us Abu al-Minhal, from Jābir ibn Sulaym al-Hujaymī, who said: I saw a man whose opinion the people followed; he would not say anything except that they followed it. I asked, "Who is this?" They said, "This is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." I said twice, "Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not say 'Upon you be peace' (ʿalayka as-salām), for 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead. Say: 'Peace be upon you' (as-salāmu ʿalayka)." I said, "Are you the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah, who, if any harm befalls you and you call upon Him, He will remove it from you; and if a year of drought befalls you and you call upon Him, He will cause the vegetation to grow for you; and if you are in a desolate land or a desert and your riding beast goes missing and you call upon Him, He will return it to you." I said, "Give me counsel." He said, "Do not revile anyone." He said: So I never reviled a free person, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a sheep after that. He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is that you speak to your brother with a cheerful face, for that is part of the good deed. And raise your lower garment to the middle of the shin; if you refuse, then to the ankles. And beware of letting the lower garment hang low, for it is an act of arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if a man reviles you and shames you for something he knows about you, do not shame him for something you know about him, so that the burden of it will be upon him."
