Hadith of Jundub bin Mukayth, from the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 186:1

Ya'qub narrated to us, he said: My father said: As Ibn Ishaq narrated to me, from Ya'qub ibn 'Utbah, from Muslim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Khubayb al-Juhani, from Jundub ibn Makith al-Juhani, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent Ghalib ibn 'Abdullah al-Kalbi, of [the tribe of] Kalb Layth, to Banu Mulawwah at al-Kadid, and he ordered him to raid them." He went out, and I was in his detachment. We proceeded until, when we were at Qadid, we met al-Harith ibn Malik, who is Ibn al-Barsa' al-Laythi, and we captured him. He said: "I only came to embrace Islam." Ghalib ibn 'Abdullah said: "If you only came as a Muslim, then being bound for a day and a night will not harm you, and if you are otherwise, we have secured ourselves against you." He said: So he bound him securely, then left a black man who was with us to guard him, and said: "Stay with him until we pass by you; if he struggles with you, strike off his head." He said: Then we proceeded until we came to the interior of al-Kadid, and we dismounted in the late afternoon after the 'Asr prayer. My companions sent me as a scout, so I headed to a hill that would overlook the encampment, and I lay flat upon it, and that was at the time of Maghrib. A man from among them came out and looked, and he saw me lying flat on the hill. He said to his wife: "By Allah, I see a black shape on this hill that I did not see earlier in the day. Look, lest the dogs have dragged away some of your vessels." He said: She looked and said: "No, by Allah, I do not miss anything." He said: "Hand me my bow and two arrows from my quiver." He said: She handed them to him, and he shot an arrow at me, placing it in my side. He said: I pulled it out and laid it down, and I did not move. Then he shot another at me, placing it in the top of my shoulder. I pulled it out and laid it down, and I did not move. He said to his wife: "By Allah, my two arrows have surely struck him, and if he were a living being, he would have moved. When morning comes, look for my arrows and take them, so the dogs do not chew them up." He said: We waited for them until their livestock returned, and when they had milked them and they had settled—or rested—and a portion of the night had passed, we launched the raid upon them. We killed those whom we killed among them, and we drove off the livestock. We turned back, heading home, and the crier of the people went out to their people calling for help. We departed quickly until we passed by al-Harith ibn al-Barsa' and his companion, and we took him with us. The crier of the people came to us, and there came upon us [a force] that we had no power to withstand. When there was nothing between us and them but the bottom of the valley, a flood arrived that came between us and them, which Allah the Exalted sent from wherever He willed. We had not seen rain before that, nor a cloud. It came with such force that no one could stand against it. We saw them standing, looking at us, and none of them was able to advance, while we crossed it quickly until we ascended the mountain of al-Mushallal, then we descended from it, and we escaped the people with what was in our hands.
