Musnad Ahmad 175:8

Isma'il narrated to us, he said: Ibn 'Awn informed us, from 'Umar ibn Kathir ibn Aflah, he said: Ka'b ibn Malik said: I was never in a military expedition with more ease regarding mounts and provisions than I was in that expedition. He said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out, I said: I will prepare myself tomorrow, then I will catch up with him. So I began my preparations, but evening came and I had not finished. I said: I will take up my preparations tomorrow, and the people are still near, then I will catch up with them. But evening came and I had not finished. When the third day came, I took up my preparations, but evening came and I had not finished. I said: Alas, the people have traveled for three days. So I stayed behind. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, the people began to offer their excuses to him. I came until I stood before him and said: I was never in a military expedition with more ease regarding mounts and provisions than I was in this expedition. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned away from me, and he ordered the people not to speak to us, and our wives were ordered to move away from us. He said: One day, I climbed over a wall and found Jabir ibn 'Abdullah. I said: O Jabir, I adjure you by Allah, have you ever known me to deceive Allah and His Messenger for even a single day? He said: He remained silent toward me and did not speak to me. He said: While I was there one day, I heard a man on the mountain pass saying: "Ka'b! Ka'b!" until he drew near to me and said: "Give glad tidings to Ka'b."
