Musnad Ahmad 908:2

'Ali ibn 'Ayyash al-Himsī narrated to us, Shu'ayb ibn Abī Hamzah narrated to us, and [likewise] Abū al-Yamān, Shu'ayb informed us, he said: And al-Zuhrī said: 'Abd Allāh ibn 'Abd Allāh ibn al-Hārith ibn Nawfal narrated to me, from 'Abd Allāh ibn Khabbāb, from his father, Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt, the freed slave of Banū Zuhrah, and he had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), that he said: I watched the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) during a night in which the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) prayed the entire night until it was near dawn. When the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) finished his prayer with the taslīm, Khabbāb came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allāh, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you have prayed a prayer tonight the likes of which I have never seen you pray!" The Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: "Yes, it is a prayer of hope and fear. I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked my Lord not to destroy us as He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted it to me. I asked my Lord not to let an enemy from outside us overcome us, and He granted it to me. And I asked my Lord not to make us into sects, and He withheld it from me." 'Abd Allāh [ibn Ahmad] said: I heard my father [Ahmad ibn Hanbal] saying: "'Alī ibn 'Ayyāsh heard this hadith from Shu'ayb ibn Abī Hamzah by direct hearing."
