Hadith 879:1
'Affan narrated to us, Hammad—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us, 'Ammar—meaning Ibn Abi 'Ammar—informed us, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: A time came upon me when I used to say: "The children of the Muslims are with the Muslims, and the children of the polytheists are with the polytheists," until so-and-so narrated to me, from so-and-so, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was asked about them, and he said: "Allah knows best what they would have been doing." He said: So I met the man and he informed me, and I refrained from my statement.
حدثنا عفان، حدثنا حماد يعني ابن سلمة، أخبرنا عمار يعني ابن أبي عمار، عن ابن عباس، قال: أتى علي زمان وأنا أقول: أولاد المسلمين مع المسلمين، وأولاد المشركين مع المشركين، حتى حدثني فلان، عن فلان، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، سئل عنهم، فقال: " الله أعلم بما كانوا عاملين "، قال: فلقيت الرجل فأخبرني، فأمسكت عن قولي
