Hadith of a Man

Hadith 294:1

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Wuhayb narrated to us, he said: Musa ibn 'Uqbah narrated to us, he said: Abu Salamah narrated to me, from the man who passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while he was conversing privately with Gabriel, peace be upon him. Abu Salamah claimed that he avoided drawing near to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, fearing that he might hear his conversation. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him: "What prevented you from greeting me when you passed by me last night?" He said: "I saw you conversing privately with a man, and I feared that you would dislike for me to draw near to you both." He said: "Do you know who the man was?" He said: "No." He said: "That was Gabriel, peace be upon him, and had you greeted, he would have returned the greeting." I have heard from someone other than Abu Salamah that it was Harithah ibn al-Nu'man.
