Musnad Ahmad 827:1

Yazid narrated to us, al-Jurayri narrated to us, from Abu al-Sulayl, who said: A man stood before us in our gathering at al-Baqi' and said: My father, or my uncle, narrated to me that he saw the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, at al-Baqi' saying: "Whoever gives charity, I will testify for him regarding it on the Day of Resurrection." He said: So I loosened a fold or two from my turban, intending to give them as charity, but then what usually befalls the children of Adam befell me, so I tied my turban back up. Then a man came—and I had not seen in al-Baqi' a man darker or smaller than him, nor a camel, for I had not seen in al-Baqi' a camel better than it—and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, is it charity?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Take this camel." He said: A man disparaged him and said: "He is giving this as charity? By Allah, it is better than him." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, heard it and said: "You have lied; rather, he is better than you and better than it," three times. Then he said: "Woe to the owners of hundreds of camels," three times. They said: "Except whom, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Except for one who does with his wealth like this and like this," and he brought his palms together to his right and to his left. Then he said: "The *muz-hid* (one who has little wealth) who is *muj-hid* (striving in worship) has succeeded," three times. The *muz-hid* is one who has little in life, and the *muj-hid* is one who strives in worship.
