Hadith 806:27
Hawdha ibn Khalifah narrated to us, ‘Awf narrated to us, from al-Hasan, who said: Ma’qil ibn Yasar became ill with an illness in which he became heavy [weak]. Ibn Ziyad came to him to visit him. He [Ma’qil] said: "I am narrating to you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying: 'Whoever is entrusted with a flock [subjects/people] and does not look after them with sincerity, he will not find the scent of Paradise, and its scent is found from a distance of a hundred years.'" Ibn Ziyad said: "Could you not have told me this before now?" He said: "And now, were it not for that which you are upon, I would not have told it to you."
حدثنا هوذة بن خليفة، حدثنا عوف، عن الحسن، قال: مرض معقل بن يسار مرضا ثقل فيه، فأتاه ابن زياد يعوده ، فقال: إني محدثك حديثا سمعته من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " من استرعي رعية، فلم يحطهم بنصيحة، لم يجد ريح الجنة، وريحها يوجد من مسيرة مائة عام "، قال ابن زياد: ألا كنت حدثتني بهذا قبل الآن؟ قال: " والآن لولا الذي أنت عليه لم أحدثك به "
