Hadith of Maymunah bint al-Harith al-Hilaliyyah, the wife of the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 1163:61

'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Sulayman al-A'mash, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Kurayb, the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, from Ibn 'Abbas, from Maymunah bint al-Harith, who said: "I placed water for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for a ritual bath (ghusl), and I screened him. He poured [water] over his hand and washed it once or twice." Sulayman said: "I do not know if he mentioned the third time or not." She said: "Then he poured with his right hand onto his left, and washed his private parts. Then he rubbed his hand on the ground or on the wall. Then he rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose, and washed his face and his hands, and washed his head. Then he poured [water] over his body, then he moved aside and washed his feet." She said: "So I handed him a cloth." She said: "He said: 'Like this,' and he gestured with his hand: 'I do not want it.'" Sulayman said: "I mentioned that to Ibrahim, and he said: 'It is like that,' and he did not disapprove of it." And Ibrahim said: "There is no harm in a towel; it is merely a habit."
