Hadith 961:103
Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Harrani narrated to us, Ubayd Allah—meaning Ibn Amr—narrated to us, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu’adh ibn Jabal, who said: Two men from the Children of Israel boasted of their lineage during the time of Moses, peace be upon him. One of them was a Muslim, and the other was a polytheist. The polytheist boasted of his lineage and said: "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so," until he reached nine forefathers. Then he said to his companion: "State your lineage, may you have no mother!" He replied: "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and I am innocent of what is beyond that." Then Moses called the people and gathered them, and said: "Judgment has been passed between you. As for you, the one who boasted of nine forefathers, you are the tenth of them in the Fire. And as for you, the one who boasted of his two parents, you are a man from the people of Islam."
