Hadith 961:113
'Affan narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, Abu 'Awn informed me, he said: I heard Al-Harith bin 'Amr, the nephew of Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah, narrating from people among the companions of Mu'adh from the people of Homs, from Mu'adh, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to Mu'adh bin Jabal when he sent him to Yemen—and he mentioned: "How will you judge if a matter of judgment is presented to you?" He said: I will judge by the Book of Allah. He said: "And if it is not in the Book of Allah?" He said: Then by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. He said: "And if it is not in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah?" He said: I will exert my own opinion, and I will not fall short. He said: So he struck my chest and said: "Praise be to Allah who has granted success to the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in that which pleases His Messenger."
