Musnad Ahmad 961:125

'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and Abu Sa'id said: Za'idah narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr—and Abu Sa'id said: 'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr narrated to us—from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who met a woman he does not know, and there is nothing a man does with his wife that he did not do with her, except that he did not have intercourse with her?" He said: Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds" [Hud: 114]. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Perform ablution, then pray." Mu'adh said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this for him specifically, or for the believers in general?" He said: "Rather, it is for the believers in general."
