Hadith 961:135
Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, Abd al-Hamid—meaning Ibn Bahram—narrated to us, Shahr narrated to us, Ibn Ghanm narrated to us, from the hadith of Mu’adh ibn Jabal, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out with the people before the expedition of Tabuk. When morning came, he prayed the morning prayer with the people, then the people mounted. When the sun rose, the people became drowsy due to the night travel, and Mu’adh kept close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), following in his tracks, while the people were scattered by their mounts on the main road, eating and walking. While Mu’adh was following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and his she-camel was eating at one moment and walking at another, Mu’adh’s she-camel stumbled. He pulled it back with the rein, and it shied away, causing the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to shy away from it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) uncovered his face and turned around, and there was no man from the army closer to him than Mu’adh. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called him and said: "O Mu’adh." He said: "At your service, O Prophet of Allah." He said: "Come closer to me." He drew near to him until their mounts touched one another. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I did not think the people were as far from us as they are." Mu’adh said: "O Prophet of Allah, the people became drowsy, so their mounts scattered with them, grazing and walking." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And I was also drowsy." When Mu’adh saw the cheerfulness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) toward him and his being alone with him, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, permit me to ask you about a word that has sickened me, weakened me, and saddened me." The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Ask me about whatever you wish." He said: "O Prophet of Allah, tell me of a deed that will cause me to enter Paradise; I will not ask you about anything else." The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bakh, bakh, bakh (an expression of approval). You have asked about something great, you have asked about something great, you have asked about something great"—three times—"and it is easy for the one whom Allah intends good, and it is easy for the one whom Allah intends good, and it is easy for the one whom Allah intends good." He did not tell him anything except that he said it to him three times—meaning he repeated it to him three times—out of eagerness that he should master it from him. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You believe in Allah and the Last Day, you establish the prayer, and you worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him, until you die while you are upon that." He said: "O Prophet of Allah, repeat it for me," and he repeated it to him three times. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If you wish, O Mu’adh, I will tell you of the head of this matter, the pillar of this matter, and the peak of its hump." Mu’adh said: "Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah, tell me." The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The head of this matter is to testify that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. The pillar of this matter is establishing the prayer and giving the zakat. And the peak of its hump is jihad in the way of Allah. I have only been commanded to fight the people until they establish the prayer, give the zakat, and testify that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. If they do that, they have protected and safeguarded their blood and their wealth, except for its right, and their reckoning is with Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no face has become pale, nor has any foot become dusty in a deed in which the degrees of Paradise are sought, after the obligatory prayer, like jihad in the way of Allah. And no servant’s scale is as heavy as a mount that is spent for him in the way of Allah or upon which he is carried in the way of Allah."
