Hadith 961:137
Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, al-Mas'udi narrated to us, and Yazid bin Harun informed us, al-Mas'udi said: Abu al-Nadr said in his hadith: 'Amr bin Murrah narrated to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, from Mu'adh bin Jabal, who said: Prayer was changed through three stages, and fasting was changed through three stages. As for the stages of prayer: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Medina and he prayed for seventeen months towards Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Then Allah revealed to him: "We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]" [Al-Baqarah: 144]. He said: So Allah turned him toward Makkah. He said: This is one stage. He said: They used to gather for prayer and notify one another of it until they almost used bells or were about to use them. He said: Then a man from the Ansar called 'Abdullah bin Zayd came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw in what a sleeper sees—and if I said I was not sleeping, I would be truthful—that while I was between sleeping and waking, I saw a person wearing two green garments. He faced the Qiblah and said: 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah,' repeating it twice by twice until he finished the Adhan. Then he paused for a moment. He said: Then he said the like of what he said, except that he added in it: 'Qad qamat al-salah, qad qamat al-salah' (The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Teach it to Bilal, so let him call the Adhan with it." Bilal was the first to call the Adhan with it. He said: Then 'Umar bin al-Khattab came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the same thing that circled him circled me, except that he preceded me." So these are two stages. He said: They used to come to the prayer while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had already preceded them in some of it. He said: A man would gesture to another when he arrived: "How much have you prayed?" He would say: "One or two [rak'ahs]," so he would pray them, then enter with the people in their prayer. He said: Then Mu'adh came and said: "I will never find it in any state except that I will be upon it, then I will make up what I missed." He said: He came while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had already preceded him in some of it. He said: So he stood with him, and when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished his prayer, he stood up and made up [what he missed]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Mu'adh has established a Sunnah for you, so do likewise." These are three stages. As for the stages of fasting: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Medina and began to fast three days of every month. Yazid said: He fasted nineteen months from Rabi' al-Awwal to Ramadan, three days of every month, and he fasted the day of 'Ashura'. Then Allah made fasting obligatory upon him, so Allah revealed: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you" [Al-Baqarah: 183] up to this verse: "And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]" [Al-Baqarah: 184]. He said: So whoever wished fasted, and whoever wished fed a poor person, and that sufficed for him. He said: Then Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) revealed the other verse: "The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an" [Al-Baqarah: 185] up to His saying: "So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it" [Al-Baqarah: 185]. He said: So Allah confirmed the fasting for the resident who is healthy, and granted a concession in it for the sick and the traveler, and confirmed the feeding for the elderly person who cannot fast. These are two stages. He said: They used to eat, drink, and approach their wives as long as they did not sleep; if they slept, they refrained. He said: Then a man from the Ansar called Sirmah spent the day working while fasting until evening came. He came to his family, prayed Isha, then slept, and he did not eat or drink until morning, so he woke up fasting. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him and he had become extremely exhausted. He said: "Why do I see you so exhausted?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I worked yesterday, and when I came, I threw myself down and slept, and I woke up this morning fasting." He said: 'Umar had also approached his wife—a slave girl or a free woman—after he had slept. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned that to him. So Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) revealed: "It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]" [Al-Baqarah: 187] up to His saying: "Then complete the fast until the night" [Al-Baqarah: 187]. Yazid said: He fasted nineteen months from Rabi' al-Awwal to Ramadan.
حدثنا أبو النضر، حدثنا المسعودي، ويزيد بن هارون أخبرنا المسعودي قال: أبو النضر في حديثه حدثني عمرو بن مرة، عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى، عن معاذ بن جبل قال: أحيلت الصلاة ثلاثة أحوال، وأحيل الصيام ثلاثة أحوال، فأما أحوال الصلاة: فإن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قدم المدينة وهو يصلي سبعة عشر شهرا إلى بيت المقدس، ثم إن الله أنزل عليه {قد نرى تقلب وجهك في السماء فلنولينك قبلة ترضاها فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرام، وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره} [البقرة: 144] قال: فوجهه الله إلى مكة قال: فهذا حول. قال: وكانوا يجتمعون للصلاة ويؤذن بها بعضهم بعضا حتى نقسوا أو كادوا ينقسون. قال ثم إن رجلا من الأنصار يقال له عبد الله بن زيد أتى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: يا رسول الله، إني رأيت فيما يرى النائم ولو قلت إني لم أكن نائما لصدقت، إني بينا أنا بين النائم واليقظان إذ رأيت شخصا عليه ثوبان أخضران فاستقبل القبلة، فقال: الله أكبر. الله أكبر. أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله . مثنى مثنى حتى فرغ من الأذان، ثم أمهل ساعة. قال: ثم قال مثل الذي قال غير أنه يزيد في ذلك قد قامت الصلاة، قد قامت الصلاة، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " علمها بلالا فليؤذن بها ". فكان بلال أول من أذن بها. قال: وجاء عمر بن الخطاب فقال: يا رسول الله، إنه قد طاف بي مثل الذي أطاف به غير أنه سبقني فهذان حولان. قال: وكانوا يأتون الصلاة، وقد سبقهم ببعضها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: فكان الرجل يشير إلى الرجل إذا جاء كم صلى؟ فيقول: واحدة أو اثنتين فيصليها، ثم يدخل مع القوم في صلاتهم قال: فجاء معاذ فقال: لا أجده على حال أبدا إلا كنت عليها، ثم قضيت ما سبقني. قال: فجاء وقد سبقه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ببعضها قال: فثبت معه، فلما قضى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صلاته قام فقضى فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إنه قد سن لكم معاذ فهكذا فاصنعوا " فهذه ثلاثة أحوال، وأما أحوال الصيام: فإن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قدم المدينة فجعل يصوم من كل شهر ثلاثة أيام، وقال يزيد: فصام تسعة عشر شهرا من ربيع الأول إلى رمضان من كل شهر ثلاثة أيام، وصام يوم عاشوراء ثم إن الله فرض عليه الصيام، فأنزل الله {يا أيها الذين آمنوا كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم} [البقرة: 183] إلى هذه الآية {وعلى الذين يطيقونه فدية طعام مسكين} [البقرة: 184] قال: فكان من شاء صام، ومن شاء أطعم مسكينا، فأجزأ ذلك عنه قال: ثم إن الله عز وجل أنزل الآية الأخرى {شهر رمضان الذي أنزل فيه القرآن} [البقرة: 185] إلى قوله {فمن شهد منكم الشهر فليصمه} [البقرة: 185] قال: فأثبت الله صيامه على المقيم الصحيح، ورخص فيه للمريض والمسافر وثبت الإطعام للكبير الذي لا يستطيع الصيام، فهذان حولان. قال: وكانوا يأكلون ويشربون ويأتون النساء ما لم يناموا، فإذا ناموا امتنعوا. قال: ثم إن رجلا من الأنصار يقال له صرمة ظل يعمل صائما حتى أمسى فجاء إلى أهله فصلى العشاء، ثم نام فلم يأكل ولم يشرب حتى أصبح فأصبح صائما قال: فرآه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقد جهد جهدا شديدا قال: " ما لي أراك قد جهدت جهدا شديدا؟ " قال: يا رسول الله، إني عملت أمس فجئت حين جئت، فألقيت نفسي فنمت، وأصبحت حين أصبحت صائما. قال: وكان عمر قد أصاب من النساء من جارية أو من حرة بعد ما نام، وأتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فذكر ذلك له فأنزل الله عز وجل {أحل لكم ليلة الصيام الرفث إلى نسائكم} [البقرة: 187] إلى قوله {ثم أتموا الصيام إلى الليل} [البقرة: 187] وقال يزيد فصام تسعة عشر شهرا من ربيع الأول إلى رمضان . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
