Hadith 961:82
Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, who said: I heard ‘Urwah ibn al-Nazzal narrating from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, who said: We came with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from the expedition of Tabuk. When I saw him unoccupied, I said: "O Messenger of Allah, inform me of a deed that will cause me to enter Paradise." He said: "You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for whomsoever Allah makes it easy: establish the prescribed prayer, pay the obligatory zakat, and meet Allah while not associating anything with Him. Shall I not guide you to the head of the matter, its pillar, and the peak of its hump? As for the head of the matter, it is Islam; whoever submits is safe. As for its pillar, it is the prayer. As for the peak of its hump, it is jihad in the way of Allah. Shall I not guide you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sins as water extinguishes fire, and the standing of a servant in the middle of the night." Then he recited this verse: {Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have bestowed on them} [As-Sajdah: 16]. "Shall I not guide you to what controls all of that for you?" He said: Then a group of people approached, and I feared they would distract the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from me. Shu‘bah said, or a word similar to it. He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, your statement: 'Shall I not guide you to what controls all of that for you?'" He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pointed with his hand to his tongue. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, are we to be held accountable for what we speak?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, Mu‘adh! Does anything cast people into the Fire upon their faces—or upon their noses—except the harvests of their tongues?" Shu‘bah said: Al-Hakam said to me, and Maymun ibn Abi Shabib narrated it to me, and al-Hakam said: I heard it from him forty years ago.
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، حدثنا شعبة، عن الحكم قال: سمعت عروة بن النزال، يحدث عن معاذ بن جبل قال: أقبلنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من غزوة تبوك، فلما رأيته خليا. قلت: يا رسول الله، أخبرني بعمل يدخلني الجنة. قال: " بخ، لقد سألت عن عظيم، وهو يسير على من يسره الله عليه تقيم الصلاة المكتوبة، وتؤدي الزكاة المفروضة، وتلقى الله لا تشرك به شيئا أولا أدلك على رأس الأمر وعموده وذروة سنامه؟ أما رأس الأمر: فالإسلام، فمن أسلم سلم، وأما عموده: فالصلاة، وأما ذروة سنامه: فالجهاد في سبيل الله، أولا أدلك على أبواب الخير؟ الصوم جنة، والصدقة وقيام العبد في جوف الليل يكفر الخطايا، وتلا هذه الآية {تتجافى جنوبهم عن المضاجع يدعون ربهم خوفا وطمعا، ومما رزقناهم ينفقون} [السجدة: 16] أولا أدلك على أملك ذلك لك كله؟ " قال: فأقبل نفر، قال: فخشيت أن يشغلوا عني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال شعبة أو كلمة نحوها، قال: فقلت: يا رسول الله، قولك أولا أدلك على أملك ذلك لك كله؟ قال: فأشار رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بيده إلى لسانه. قال: قلت: يا رسول الله وإنا لنؤاخذ بما نتكلم به؟ قال: " ثكلتك أمك معاذ، وهل يكب الناس على مناخرهم إلا حصائد ألسنتهم؟ " قال شعبة: قال لي الحكم وحدثني به ميمون بن أبي شبيب، وقال الحكم سمعته منه منذ أربعين سنة
