Hadith 961:87
Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Shu'ayb informed us, 'Abdullah ibn Abi Husayn narrated to me, Shahr ibn Hawshab narrated to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanam—and he is the one whom 'Umar ibn al-Khattab sent to the Levant to teach the people jurisprudence—that Mu'adh ibn Jabal narrated to him, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): That he rode one day upon a donkey of his, which was called Ya'fur, its halter made of palm fiber. Then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Ride, O Mu'adh." I said: "Proceed, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Ride." So I rode behind him, and the donkey caused us to fall. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up laughing, and I stood up feeling regret for myself. Then he did that a second time, then a third time, then he rode, and the donkey proceeded with us. Then he reached back with his hand and struck my back with a whip or a stick he had with him. Then he said: "O Mu'adh, do you know what is the right of Allah upon the servants?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Indeed, the right of Allah upon the servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him." He said: Then he proceeded for as long as Allah willed, then he reached back with his hand and struck my back. He said: "O Mu'adh, O son of Umm Mu'adh, do you know what is the right of the servants upon Allah if they do that?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Indeed, the right of the servants upon Allah if they do that is that He enters them into Paradise."
