Hadith 961:94
Kathir ibn Hisham narrated to us, Ja'far—meaning Ibn Burqan—narrated to us, Habib ibn Abi Marzuq narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, from Abu Muslim al-Khawlani, who said: I entered the mosque of Homs, and there were about thirty elderly men from the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Among them was a young man with kohl-lined eyes, sparkling teeth, who was silent. Whenever the people disputed over something, they would turn to him and ask him. I said to a person sitting next to me, "Who is this?" He said, "This is Mu'adh ibn Jabal." Love for him fell into my heart. I remained with them until they dispersed. Then I went early to the mosque, and there was Mu'adh ibn Jabal standing, praying by a pillar. He remained silent and did not speak to me. I prayed, then I sat and wrapped my cloak around my legs. Then he sat and remained silent, not speaking to me, and I remained silent, not speaking to him. Then I said, "By Allah, I truly love you." He said, "For what do you love me?" I said, "For the sake of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He." He took hold of my cloak and pulled me toward him a little, then said, "Rejoice, if you are truthful. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'Those who love one another for the sake of My Majesty shall have pulpits of light; the prophets and the martyrs shall envy them.'" He said: So I went out and met 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit and said, "O Abu al-Walid, shall I not tell you what Mu'adh ibn Jabal told me regarding those who love one another?" He said, "Rather, I shall tell you what the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, attributing it to the Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He: 'My love is guaranteed for those who love one another for My sake, and My love is guaranteed for those who visit one another for My sake, and My love is guaranteed for those who spend on one another for My sake, and My love is guaranteed for those who maintain ties with one another for My sake.'"
