Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, he said: Safwan narrated to us, he said: Azhar ibn Abdullah al-Hawzani—Abu al-Mughirah said in another place: al-Harazi—narrated to me, from Abu Amir Abdullah ibn Luhay, who said: We performed Hajj with Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. When we arrived in Makkah, he stood up after he prayed the Dhuhr prayer and said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The People of the Two Books divided in their religion into seventy-two sects, and this nation will divide into seventy-three sects'—meaning: desires—'all of them are in the Fire except one, and it is the Jama'ah (the community).'" "And there will emerge among my nation people who will be consumed by those desires just as rabies consumes its victim; it leaves no vein and no joint except that it enters it." "By Allah, O assembly of Arabs, if you do not uphold that which your Prophet (ﷺ) brought, then others among the people are more likely not to uphold it."
