Musnad Ahmad 1094:4

'Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, I heard Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Hilal ibn Abi Maymunah, that 'Ata' ibn Yasar narrated to him that Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam narrated to him three hadiths he memorized from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people recently emerged from Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), and Allah the Almighty has brought Islam. Among us are men who practice divination by drawing lines (khatt)." He said: "There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines, so whoever’s lines coincide with his, then that is it." He said: I said, "Among us are men who practice augury (taking omens from birds)." He said: "That is something they find in their chests, so let it not turn you away." He said: I said, "Among us are men who go to the soothsayers." He said: "Do not go to them." He said: This is one hadith. He said: I had sheep, and I had a slave girl who tended them in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawaniyyah. One day, I checked on her and found that a wolf had taken a sheep from them. I became angry, and I am a man from the children of Adam; I get angry as they get angry, so I struck her a blow. I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: "I had sheep, and I had a slave girl who tended them in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawaniyyah. One day, I checked on her and found that a wolf had taken a sheep from them. I became angry, and I am a man from the children of Adam; I get angry as they get angry, so I struck her a blow." He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, considered that a grave matter. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not free her?" He said: "Call her." So I called her. He said to her: "Where is Allah?" She said: "Allah is in the heaven." He said: "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said: "She is a believer, so free her." He said: These are two hadiths. He said: I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, one day, and a man from the people sneezed, so I said: "May Allah have mercy on you (Yarhamuk Allah)." The people cast their gazes at me, so I said: "Woe to my mother! What is the matter with you that you are looking at me?" He said: They struck their thighs with their hands. When I saw them trying to silence me, I fell silent. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, finished praying, he called me. He said: By my father and mother, I have not seen a teacher before him or after him better at teaching than him. He did not strike me, nor did he rebuke me, nor did he insult me. He said: "Indeed, this prayer of ours is not suitable for anything of the speech of people; it is only for glorifying Allah (Tasbih), declaring His greatness (Takbir), and the recitation of the Quran," or as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said. These are three hadiths he narrated to me.
