Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami (RA)
Hadith 1094:6
Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Hajjaj al-Sawwaf, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me, Hilal ibn Abi Maymunah narrated to me, from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, from Mu'awiyah al-Sulami, who said: I prayed with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: A man among the people sneezed, so I said: "May Allah have mercy on you (Yarhamuk Allah)." The people cast their gazes at me, so I said: "Woe to my mother! What is the matter with you that you are looking at me?" He said: They began striking their hands upon their thighs, so I realized they were telling me to be silent, but I remained silent. When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—may my father and mother be sacrificed for him—finished the prayer, he did not rebuke me, nor did he scold me, nor did he strike me. He said: "Indeed, this prayer is not suitable for anything of the speech of people; it is only for glorification (Tasbih), declaring greatness (Takbir), and the recitation of the Qur'an," or as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people who have recently come out of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and Allah has brought Islam. Among us are men who go to soothsayers." He said: "Do not go to them." I said: "And among us are men who practice augury (Tiyarah)." He said: "That is something they find in their chests, so let it not turn them away." I said: "And among us are men who draw lines (in the sand)." He said: "There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines, so whoever's drawing matches his, then that is it." He said: While I had a slave girl who was tending to some small sheep of mine in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawwaniyyah, I looked out and saw that a wolf had taken a sheep from them. I am a man from the children of Adam; I grieve as they grieve, so I struck her a blow. He said: This was considered a grave matter by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I said: "Shall I free her?" He said: "Bring her to me." He said: So he sent for her, and she was brought. He said: "Where is Allah?" She said: "In the heaven." He said: "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Free her, for she is a believer."
