Hadith 883:7
Hushaym narrated to us, Khalid narrated to us, from Abu Mulayh, from Nubayshah al-Hudhali, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I said: "We used to sacrifice an *Atirah* (a sacrifice in the month of Rajab) during the Pre-Islamic period, so what do you command us?" He said: "Sacrifice in any month that it may be, and be dutiful to Allah, and feed [others]." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice a *Fara'* (the firstborn of livestock) during the Pre-Islamic period, so what do you command us?" He said: "In every grazing herd, there is a *Fara'* that your livestock nourishes. When it becomes strong enough to be ridden, you slaughter it and give its meat as charity." He said: I think he said: "To the wayfarer, for that is better."
حدثنا هشيم، حدثنا خالد، عن أبي مليح، عن نبيشة الهذلي، قال: سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قلت: إنا كنا نعتر عتيرة لنا في الجاهلية، فما تأمرنا؟ قال: " اذبحوا في أي شهر ما كان، وبروا الله وأطعموا "، قلت: يا رسول الله، إنا كنا نفرع فرعا في الجاهلية، فما تأمرنا؟ قال: في كل سائمة فرع تغذوه ماشيتك، فإذا استحمل ذبحته، وتصدقت بلحمه، قال : أحسبه قال: على ابن السبيل، فإن ذلك خير "
