Musnad Ahmad 877:1

'Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, 'Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Abu Hurrah al-Raqashi, from his uncle, who said: I was holding the rein of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) during the middle days of Tashriq, keeping the people away from him. He said: "O people, do you know what day you are in? And what month you are in? And what land you are in?" They said: In a sacred day, a sacred month, and a sacred land. He said: "Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to you, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet Him." Then he said: "Listen to me so that you may live. Beware, do not oppress. Beware, do not oppress. Beware, do not oppress. It is not lawful for the wealth of a person to be taken except by his own good pleasure. Beware, every blood, wealth, and claim of honor from the Jahiliyyah is under these feet of mine until the Day of Resurrection. The first blood to be waived is the blood of Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib; he was being nursed among Banu Layth, and the Hudhayl killed him. Beware, every usury from the Jahiliyyah is waived, and Allah has decreed that the first usury to be waived is the usury of al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib. You shall have your capital; you will not oppress, nor will you be oppressed. Beware, time has turned as it was on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth." Then he recited: {Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them}. "Beware, do not return after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another. Beware, Satan has despaired of being worshipped by those who pray, but [he is satisfied with] stirring up conflict between you. So fear Allah regarding women, for they are captives with you; they possess nothing for themselves. You have a right over them, and they have a right over you: that they do not let anyone you dislike tread upon your bedding, and they do not permit anyone in your houses whom you dislike. If you fear their disobedience, then admonish them, forsake them in their beds, and strike them with a strike that is not severe." Humayd said: I said to al-Hasan: "What is 'not severe'?" He said: "That which does not leave a mark." "They have their provision and their clothing according to what is recognized. You have taken them by the trust of Allah, and you have made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. Beware, whoever has a trust, let him return it to the one who entrusted him with it." He spread his hands and said: "Have I conveyed? Have I conveyed? Have I conveyed?" Then he said: "Let the witness convey to the absent, for perhaps the one to whom it is conveyed will be more understanding than the one who hears it." Humayd said: Al-Hasan said when he reached this word: "By Allah, they have conveyed it to people who were more fortunate because of it."
