Hadith of Qays ibn ‘Abbad, from Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (RA)

Hadith 934:1

Muhammad ibn Ja’far narrated to us, Shu’bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Abu Jamrah, Iyas ibn Qatadah narrated to us, from Qays—meaning Ibn ‘Abbad. Muhammad ibn Ja’far said: "I dropped him from my book; it is from Qays, if Allah wills." Sulayman ibn Dawud and Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us, they said: Shu’bah narrated to us, from Abu Jamrah, he said: I heard Iyas ibn Qatadah narrating from Qays ibn ‘Abbad, he said: I came to Medina to meet the companions of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and there was no man among them whom I met who was more beloved to me than my father. The prayer was established, and ‘Umar went out with the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I stood in the first row, and a man came and looked at the faces of the people, and he recognized them, but he did not recognize me. He moved me aside and stood in my place. I did not comprehend my prayer. When he finished praying, he said: "O my son, may Allah not cause you distress. I did not come to you in the place you were out of ignorance, but the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to us: 'Be in the row that is adjacent to me.' And I looked at the faces of the people and recognized them, but I did not recognize you." Then he spoke, and I have never seen men stretching their necks toward anything as they stretched them toward him. He said: "The people of the knot (the leaders/those in authority) have perished, by the Lord of the Ka’bah. Beware, I do not grieve for them, but I grieve for those of the Muslims whom they destroy." And behold, it was my father. The hadith is according to the wording of Sulayman ibn Dawud.
