Hadith of Rafi‘ ibn Khudayj (RA)

Hadith 481:28

Sa'id ibn 'Amir narrated to us, he said: Shu'bah narrated to us, he said: Sa'id ibn Masruq narrated to us, from 'Abayah ibn Rifa'ah ibn Rafi' ibn Khadij, from his grandfather Rafi' ibn Khadij, who said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are meeting the enemy tomorrow and we do not have knives." He said: "Whatever causes blood to flow and the name of Allah is mentioned over it, then eat it, except for the tooth and the nail. And I will tell you why: as for the tooth, it is a bone; and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) obtained some spoils, and a camel ran away from them. They chased it but could not catch it, so a man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "These camels—or he said: livestock—have wild tendencies like wild animals, so whatever of them overcomes you, do to it like this."
