Hadith 179:21
Isma'il narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from Ya'la ibn Hakim, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from Rafi' ibn Khadij, who said: We used to practice *muhaqala* (sharecropping) on the land during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and we would lease it for a third, a quarter, or a specified amount of food. Then one day, a man from my paternal uncles came to us and said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has forbidden us from a matter that was beneficial to us, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial to us. He forbade us from practicing *muhaqala* on the land, and from leasing it for a third, a quarter, or a specified amount of food." He commanded the owner of the land to cultivate it himself or to let it be cultivated, and he disliked leasing it, and everything other than that.
