Hadith of Safiyyah (RA), Mother of the Believers

Hadith 1164:9

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, he said: Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Thabit, who said: Shumaysa, or Sumayya—'Abd al-Razzaq said: It is in my book "Sumayya"—narrated to me, from Safiyya bint Huyayy, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed Hajj with his wives. When they were on some part of the road, a man descended and drove them [the camels] quickly. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Drive gently with the glass vessels," meaning the women. While they were traveling, the camel of Safiyya bint Huyayy knelt down, and she was one of the best of them in terms of riding. She wept. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came when he was informed of that, and he began to wipe her tears with his hand. She continued to increase in weeping, and he was forbidding her. When she persisted, he scolded her and rebuked her, and he ordered the people to stop, so they stopped, though he had not intended to stop. She said: So they stopped, and it was my day. When they stopped, the tent of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was pitched, and he entered it. She said: I did not know what I might encounter from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and I feared that there might be something in his heart [against me]. So I went to 'Aisha and said to her: "You know that I would never sell my day with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for anything, and I have gifted my day to you, provided that you make the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pleased with me." She said: "Yes." She said: So 'Aisha took a head covering of hers that she had soaked in saffron and sprinkled it with water to enhance its scent. Then she put on her clothes and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and lifted the edge of the tent. He said to her: "What is the matter with you, 'Aisha? This is not your day." She said: "That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills." He stayed with his wife. When it was time for departure, he said to Zaynab bint Jahsh: "O Zaynab, lend your sister Safiyya a camel," and she was one of those who had the most camels. She said: "Shall I lend to your Jewess?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became angry when he heard that from her, so he shunned her and did not speak to her until he arrived in Mecca, and during the days of Mina on his journey, until he returned to Medina, and [through] Muharram and Safar. He did not come to her and did not divide [his time] for her, and she despaired of him. When it was the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, he entered upon her. She saw his shadow and said: "This is the shadow of a man, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) does not enter upon me, so who is this?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered. When she saw him, she said: "O Messenger of Allah, I do not know what to do now that you have entered upon me." She said: She had a slave girl whom she used to hide from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and she said: "So-and-so is for you." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) walked to Zaynab's bed, which had been raised, and he lowered it with his hand, then he had relations with his wife and was pleased with them.
