Musnad Ahmad 1313:11

Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Sulayman—meaning Ibn Qarm—narrated to us, from Simak, from Humayd, the nephew of Safwan ibn Umayyah, from Safwan ibn Umayyah, who said: I was sleeping in the mosque on a garment of mine (khamisah), and it was stolen. We caught the thief and brought him to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He ordered that his hand be cut off. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, for a garment worth thirty dirhams? I grant it to him, or I sell it to him." He said: "Why was it not before you brought him to me?"
