Musnad Ahmad 1313:6

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, he said: Sa‘id—meaning Ibn Abi ‘Arubah—narrated to us, from Qatadah, from ‘Ata’, from Tariq ibn Muraqqi‘, from Safwan ibn Umayyah, that a man stole his cloak, so he brought him to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He ordered his hand to be cut off. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have pardoned him." He said: "Why was this not before you brought him to me, O Abu Wahb?" Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, cut off his hand.
