Hadith of Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (RA)
Hadith 526:1
'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Amr Abu 'Amir narrated to us, he said: Hisham ibn Sa'd narrated to us, he said: Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibi narrated to us, he said: My father informed me—and he was a companion of Abu al-Darda'—he said: There was a man in Damascus from the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, who was called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah. He was a man who kept to himself, rarely sitting with people; he was only in prayer. When he finished, he would only perform tasbih (saying Subhan Allah) and takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) until he went to his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said to him: "A word that will benefit us and not harm you." He said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, sent out a military detachment, and it returned. A man from among them came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, was. He said to a man beside him: "If you had seen us when we met the enemy, so-and-so charged and struck, saying: 'Take it, and I am the Ghifari youth!' What do you think of his statement?" He said: "I do not see it as anything but that he has nullified his reward." Another heard that and said: "I do not see any harm in that." They disputed until the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, heard it and said: "Subhan Allah! There is no harm in him being praised and rewarded." He said: I saw Abu al-Darda' pleased with that, and he began to raise his head toward him and say: "Did you hear that from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace?" He would say: "Yes." He kept repeating it to him until I said to myself: "He is about to kneel on his knees." He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda' said to him: "A word that will benefit us and not harm you." He said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to us: "Indeed, the one who spends on horses in the way of God is like the one who stretches out his hand with charity and does not withdraw it." He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda' said to him: "A word that will benefit us and not harm you." He said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "An excellent man is Khuraym al-Asadi, were it not for the length of his hair and the trailing of his lower garment." News of this reached Khuraym, so he took a blade and cut his hair to the middle of his ears, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins. He said: My father informed me, saying: "I entered upon Mu'awiyah after that, and there was an old man with him whose hair was above his ears and his garment was to his shins. I asked about him, and they said: 'This is Khuraym al-Asadi.'" He said: Then he passed by us another day while we were with Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said to him: "A word that will benefit us and not harm you." He said: I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, say: "You are coming to your brothers, so fix your saddles and fix your clothing, for God does not love obscenity or the acting of obscenity."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
