Hadith of Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (RA)

Hadith 526:3

Waki’ narrated to us, Hisham bin Sa’d narrated to us, Qays bin Bishr al-Taghlibi narrated to me, from his father—who was a companion of Abu al-Darda’ in Damascus—he said: There was a man in Damascus called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, who was a recluse and would hardly speak to anyone; he was only in prayer. When he finished, he would glorify Allah (tasbih), magnify Him (takbir), and profess His oneness (tahlil) until he returned to his family. He said: One day he passed by us while we were with Abu al-Darda’, and Abu al-Darda’ said to him: "A word from you that benefits us and does not harm you." He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us on a military expedition. When we arrived, a man among them sat in a gathering where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was, and said: 'O so-and-so, if you had seen so-and-so, he was stabbed, then he said: Take it, and I am the Ghifari youth! What do you think?' He said: 'I do not think of him except that his reward has been nullified.' He said: They spoke about that until the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard their voices, so he said: 'Rather, he is praised and rewarded.' He said: Abu al-Darda’ was pleased with that, to the point that he intended to kneel on his knees, and said: 'Did you hear it from him?' repeatedly. He said: 'Yes.'" Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda’ said: "A word from you that benefits us and does not harm you." He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'An excellent man is Khuraym al-Asadi, if only he would shorten his hair and raise his lower garment.' This reached Khuraym, so he hastened and took a blade, shortened his hair, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins." My father said: "I entered upon Mu’awiyah and saw a man with him on the couch, his hair was above his ears, and he was wearing his lower garment up to the middle of his shins. I said: 'Who is this?' They said: 'Khuraym al-Asadi.'" He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda’ said: "A word from you that benefits us and does not harm you." He said: "Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said to us: 'You are going to visit your brothers, so fix your saddles and your clothing until you are like a beauty mark among the people, for Allah does not love indecency or the seeking of indecency.'"
