Hadith of Salamah ibn al-Akwa‘ (RA)
Hadith 333:21
Safwan ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, he said: Yazid—meaning ibn Abi ‘Ubayd—informed us, from Salamah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered his herald on the day of ‘Ashura: "Whoever has eaten in the morning, let him abstain [from food for the rest of the day], and whoever has not eaten in the morning, let him complete his fast." Safwan narrated to us: from Yazid ibn Abi ‘Ubayd, from Salamah, who said: When we arrived at Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw fires being lit. He said: "For what are these fires being lit?" They said: "For the meat of domestic donkeys." He said: "Break the pots and spill what is in them." A man from the people stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall we spill what is in them and wash them?" He said: "Or that [is also acceptable]." Makki ibn Ibrahim narrated to me, he said: Yazid ibn Abi ‘Ubayd narrated to us, from Salamah ibn al-Akwa‘, that he informed him, saying: I went out from Medina heading toward al-Ghabah, until when I was at the mountain pass of al-Ghabah, a servant of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf met me. I said: "Woe to you, what is the matter with you?" He said: "The milch camels of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, have been taken." I said: "Who took them?" He said: "Ghatafan and Fazarah." I let out three cries that were heard by those between its two lava fields: "O morning raid! O morning raid!" Then I rushed forth until I caught up with them while they had taken them. I began shooting at them and saying: "I am the son of al-Akwa‘, And today is the day of the base-born." I rescued them from them before they could drink, and I came back driving them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, met me, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people are thirsty, and I hurried them away before they could drink, so I will go in pursuit of them." He said: "O son of al-Akwa‘, you have gained power, so be lenient, for the people are now being entertained by their own people."
