Hadith of Salamah ibn al-Akwa‘ (RA)

Hadith 333:26

'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, he said: 'Ikrimah narrated to us, he said: Iyas narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, he said: "We arrived with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at al-Hudaybiyah, and we were fourteen hundred, and there were fifty sheep for them that would not satisfy them. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sat upon its well, and he either prayed or spat, and it surged, so we drank and drew water." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called for the pledge of allegiance at the base of the tree. The first of the people pledged allegiance to him, and he pledged, and pledged, until when he was in the middle of the people, he said: "O Salamah, pledge allegiance to me." I said: I have already pledged allegiance to you among the first of the people, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "And also, so pledge." He saw me unarmed, so he gave me a shield or a buckler. Then he pledged, and pledged, until when he was at the end of the people, he said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to me?" He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I pledged allegiance to you among the first of the people, the middle of them, and the last of them. He said: "And also, so pledge." So I pledged allegiance to him. Then he said: "Where is your buckler or shield that I gave you?" He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, my uncle 'Amir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him. He said: He said: "You are like the one who said: 'O Allah, provide me with a beloved who is more beloved to me than my own self,'" and he laughed. Then the polytheists sent messengers to us for peace, until some of us walked to others. He said: I was a follower of Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah, grooming his horse, giving it water, and eating from his food, and I had left my family and my wealth, migrating to Allah and His Messenger. When we and the people of Makkah made peace and some of us mixed with others, I came to the tree, cleared its thorns, and lay down in its shade. Four of the people of Makkah came to me, and while they were polytheists, they began to speak ill of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. So I moved away from them to another tree, and they hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were like that, a caller called from the bottom of the valley: "O family of the Muhajirun, Ibn Zunaym has been killed!" I drew my sword and charged at the four, took their weapons, and made them into a bundle. Then I said: "By the One who honored Muhammad, no man among you shall raise his head except that I will strike the one in which his eyes are." I came driving them toward the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. My uncle 'Amir came with Ibn Mukarriz, leading his horse, leading seventy, until we stood them before him. He looked at them and said: "Let them go; let them have the beginning of wickedness." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, pardoned them, and it was revealed: {And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them} [Al-Fath: 24]. Then we returned to Madinah, and we stopped at a place called Lahy Jamal. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked for forgiveness for whoever climbed the mountain that night, as if he were a scout for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his companions. So I climbed it that night two or three times. Then we arrived in Madinah, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent his camels with his servant Rabah, and I was with him. I went out with Talhah's horse to let it graze on its back. When morning came, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Uyaynah al-Fazari had raided the camels of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and snatched them all away and killed their shepherd.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
