Hadith of Salamah ibn Sakhr al-Zuraqi al-Ansari (RA)

Hadith 327:3

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq informed us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Ata’, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from Salamah ibn Sakhr al-Ansari, who said: I was a man who had been given regarding sexual intercourse with women what had not been given to others. When Ramadan entered, I performed *zihar* (declaring my wife like my mother’s back) upon my wife until Ramadan should pass, fearing that I might do something during my night, and thus continue in that until the day overtook me while I was unable to refrain. While she was serving me, something of her was uncovered to me, so I leaped upon her. When morning came, I went to my people and informed them of my news, and I said to them: "Go with me to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so that I may inform him of my affair." They said: "No, by Allah, we will not do it. We fear that a Quran might be revealed concerning us, or that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, might say something about us that would leave us with shame. Rather, you go and do what seems best to you." He said: So I went out until I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I informed him of my news. He said to me: "Are you that one?" I said: "I am that one." He said: "Are you that one?" I said: "I am that one." He said: "Are you that one?" I said: "Yes, here I am, so carry out the judgment of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for I am patient for it." He said: "Free a slave." I said: And I struck the side of my neck with my hand and said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not wake up owning anything other than it." He said: "Then fast for two months." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, did what befell me befall me except because of fasting?" He said: "Then give charity." I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, we spent this night of ours hungry, having no dinner." He said: "Go to the collector of the charity of Banu Zurayq and tell him to hand it over to you, then feed from it on your behalf a *wasq* of dates to sixty poor people, then seek help with the rest of it for yourself and your family." He said: So I returned to my people and said: "I found with you narrowness and poor judgment, and I found with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, abundance and blessing. He has ordered your charity for me, so hand it over to me." He said: So they handed it over to me.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
