Hadith of Shaddad ibn al-Had (RA)
حديث شداد بن الهاد
Hadith 1316:0
Narrated to us by Yahya ibn Sa’id, from Khalid ibn Abi Karima, from al-Miqdam ibn Shurayh, from his father, from Shaddad ibn al-Had: A man from the desert came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and believed in him and followed him. Then he said: "I will migrate with you." The Prophet (ﷺ) recommended some of his companions to look after him. When a battle took place, the Prophet (ﷺ) took some spoils of war and divided them. He gave the man his share, as he had assigned his share to his companions. He was watching over their mounts. When he came, they gave it to him. He asked: "What is this?" They said: "A share the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) divided for you." He took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "What is this?" He (ﷺ) said: "I divided it for you." He said: "It was not for this that I followed you, but I followed you so that I might be struck here—and he pointed to his throat—with an arrow, and die, and enter Paradise." He (ﷺ) said: "If you are truthful to Allah, He will be truthful to you." Then they stayed for a while and then rose to fight the enemy. He was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) carried, having been struck by an arrow where he had pointed. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: "Is it him?" They said: "Yes." He (ﷺ) said: "He was truthful to Allah, so He was truthful to him." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) shrouded him in his own cloak, placed him forward, and prayed over him. Among what was heard of his prayer was: "O Allah, this is Your servant who went out as a migrant in Your cause and was killed as a martyr. I am a witness to that."
