Hadith of Shaddad ibn Aws (RA)

Hadith 458:30

Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Hamid—meaning Ibn Bahram—narrated to us, he said: Shahr ibn Hawshab said: Ibn Ghanm said: When we entered the Mosque of al-Jabiyah, I and Abu al-Darda’, we met Ubadah ibn al-Samit. He took my right hand with his left, and the left hand of Abu al-Darda’ with his right, and he went out walking between us while we were whispering—and Allah knows best what we were whispering about, and that is his statement. Ubadah ibn al-Samit said: "If the life of one of you, or both of you, is prolonged, you will soon see a man from the midst of the Muslims—meaning from the center—who has recited the Quran upon the tongue of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He repeats it and initiates it, declares its lawful as lawful, declares its unlawful as unlawful, and settles where it settles, or he recites it upon the tongue of his brother, a recitation upon the tongue of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He repeats it and initiates it, declares its lawful as lawful, declares its unlawful as unlawful, and settles where it settles. He will not return among you except as the head of a dead donkey returns." He said: While we were like that, Shaddad ibn Aws and Awf ibn Malik appeared, and they sat with us. Shaddad said: "The thing I fear most for you, O people, is what I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'From the hidden desire and polytheism (shirk).'" Ubadah ibn al-Samit and Abu al-Darda’ said: "O Allah, grant forgiveness! Did the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, not tell us: 'Indeed, Satan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula'? As for the hidden desire, we have known it; it is the desires of the world, its women and its lusts. But what is this polytheism that you are frightening us with, O Shaddad?" Shaddad said: "Do you see, if you saw a man praying for a man, or fasting for him, or giving charity for him, do you think he has committed polytheism?" They said: "Yes, by Allah, whoever prays for a man, or fasts for him, or gives charity for him, he has indeed committed polytheism." Shaddad said: "For I have heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'Whoever prays showing off has committed polytheism, and whoever fasts showing off has committed polytheism, and whoever gives charity showing off has committed polytheism.'" Awf ibn Malik said at that: "Does He not intend for that which was sought for His Face from all of that deed, so He accepts what was sincere for Him and leaves what he associated with Him in?" Shaddad said at that: "For I have heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: 'Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: I am the best of partners for whoever associates anything with Me. Whoever associates anything with Me, then his entire deed, its little and its much, is for his partner whom he associated with Me, and I am free of it.'"

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
