Musnad Ahmad 539:1

'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, he said: Qatadah narrated to us, from Shahr, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanam, he said: When the plague occurred in al-Sham, 'Amr ibn al-'As addressed the people and said: "Indeed, this plague is an abomination, so disperse from it into these mountain passes and these valleys." That reached Shurahbil ibn Hasanah, and he became angry. He came dragging his garment, holding his sandal in his hand, and said: "I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and 'Amr is more misguided than his family's donkey. Rather, it is a mercy from your Lord, a supplication of your Prophet, and the passing of the righteous before you."
