Musnad Ahmad 376:1

Abu ‘Amir narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Yazid—meaning Ibn Jabir—from Khalid ibn al-Lalaj, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘A’ish, from some of the companions of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out to them one morning, and he was of good spirit, with a bright face, or a radiant face. We said: "O Prophet of Allah, we see you of good spirit, with a bright face, or a radiant face." He said: "And what would prevent me, when my Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, came to me tonight in the best form and said: 'O Muhammad.' I said: 'Here I am, my Lord, and at Your service.' He said: 'What are the Highest Assembly disputing about?' I said: 'I do not know, my Lord.' He said that two or three times. He said: 'So He placed His palms between my shoulder blades, and I felt their coolness between my breasts, until everything in the heavens and the earth was revealed to me.' Then he recited this verse: {And thus We showed Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that he might be among the certain [in faith]}. Then He said: 'O Muhammad, what are the Highest Assembly disputing about?' I said: 'About the expiations.' He said: 'And what are the expiations?' I said: 'Walking on foot to the Friday prayers, sitting in the mosque after the prayers, and performing ablution thoroughly despite difficulties.' He said: 'Whoever does that shall live in goodness and die in goodness, and he shall be [cleansed] of his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him.' And among the degrees are: speaking good words, spreading peace, feeding the hungry, and praying at night while the people are asleep. He said: 'O Muhammad, when you pray, say: O Allah, I ask You for good deeds, the abandonment of evil deeds, the love of the poor, and that You forgive me. And if You intend a trial for the people, then take my soul without having been tried.'"
