Musnad Ahmad 506:1

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Ya‘la ibn Hakim, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from Rafi‘ ibn Khadij, who said: We used to practice *muhaqalah* (sharecropping) during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for a third, a quarter, or a specified amount of food. He said: Then some of my paternal uncles came to us and said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, has forbidden us from a matter that was beneficial to us, yet obedience to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is higher and more beneficial for us. We said: And what is that? He said: The Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Whoever has land, let him cultivate it, or let his brother cultivate it, and let him not lease it for a third, nor a quarter, nor for a specified amount of food." Qatadah said: "And it is *zahir* (a support/backing)."
