Hadith 1116:3
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Zuhayr, from 'Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil, from Hamzah ibn Suhayb, that Suhayb used to be called Abu Yahya, and he would say that he was from the Arabs, and he would provide much food. 'Umar said to him: "O Suhayb, why are you called Abu Yahya when you have no child? And you say that you are from the Arabs, and you provide much food, and that is extravagance in wealth?" Suhayb said: "As for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he gave me the kunya Abu Yahya. As for your statement regarding my lineage, I am a man from the [tribe of] Nimr ibn Qasit, from the people of Mosul, but I was taken captive as a young boy, and I remember my family and my people. As for your statement regarding the food, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: 'The best of you is the one who provides food and returns the greeting.' That is what compels me to provide food."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، عن زهير، عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل، عن حمزة بن صهيب، أن صهيبا، كان يكنى أبا يحيى ويقول: إنه من العرب، ويطعم الطعام الكثير، فقال له عمر: يا صهيب، ما لك تكنى أبا يحيى وليس لك ولد؟ وتقول: إنك من العرب، وتطعم الطعام الكثير، وذلك سرف في المال؟ فقال صهيب: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كناني أبا يحيى، وأما قولك في النسب، فأنا رجل من النمر بن قاسط من أهل الموصل، ولكني سبيت غلاما صغيرا قد عقلت أهلي وقومي، وأما قولك في الطعام، فإن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقول: " خياركم من أطعم الطعام ورد السلام " فذلك الذي يحملني على أن أطعم الطعام
