Musnad Ahmad 512:11

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri—al-Zuhri said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Malik al-Mudliji, who is the nephew of Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'sham, informed me that his father informed him that he heard Suraqah say: "The messengers of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, placing a blood-money [bounty] for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and for Abu Bakr—the blood-money of each one of them—for whoever killed them or captured them. While I was sitting in a gathering of my people, Banu Mudlij, a man from among them approached until he stood over us and said: 'O Suraqah, I have just seen black shapes on the coast; I believe them to be Muhammad and his companions.' Suraqah said: I knew that it was them, but I said: 'They are not them, rather you saw so-and-so and so-and-so who departed just now.' I remained in the gathering for a while, then I stood up and entered my house. I ordered my slave girl to bring out my horse, which was behind a hill, and to keep it for me. I took my spear and went out with it from the back of the house. I drew a line on the ground with my spear and lowered the head of the spear until I reached my horse. I mounted it and urged it to trot with me until I saw their black shapes. When I drew near them, to the point where I could hear their voices, my horse stumbled with me and I fell off it. I stood up and reached with my hand into my quiver, took out the arrows of divination, and sought a verdict with them: should I harm them or not? The result came out as I disliked: that I should not harm them. I mounted my horse, disobeyed the arrows, and urged it to trot with me. Ma'mar said: I asked Abu 'Amr ibn al-'Ala': "What is the *'athan*?" He remained silent for a while, then said: "It is smoke without fire." Al-Zuhri said in his hadith: "I sought a verdict with the arrows, and the result came out as I disliked: that I should not harm them. So I called out to them for safety, and they stopped. I rode my horse until I came to them. It occurred to me, when I encountered what I encountered of being restrained from them, that the affair of the Messenger of Allah would surely prevail. I said to him: 'Your people have placed a blood-money on you.' I informed them of the news of their journey and what the people intended for them. I offered them provisions and goods, but they did not take anything from me, nor did they ask me for anything, except: 'Keep our secret.' I asked him to write a document of peace for me by which I would be safe, so he ordered 'Amir ibn Fuhayrah, and he wrote for me on a piece of parchment, then he departed."
